Chapter Ten

‘Are we clear on the mission’ Craig’s American accent was discernible even though he was whispering. ‘Do we all know our roles here?’

Pippa and Sam glanced at each other and smiled. Pippa put lips near to Sam’s ear and whispered, ‘Never stops, does he?’

Sam rolled her eyes. Once it had become clear that Sam to be admitted to the group’s secrets, Craig had done little but talk all the long, bumpy way from Alton to London. The idea for this ‘mission’ had been his, apparently.

They were going to paint the embassy ‘red with blood’, using cans signal-red acrylic.

The night was quiet, and fairly warm, which was bad: even though it was 5 a.m., they had met several drunken partygoers as they made their way towards St James’s square. Worse, one of the embassies – not the American – seemed to be holding an all-night ball. Cars came and went under the trees, amber street light glinting off their darkened windows. Sam saw them stop on the far side of the square and pick up men in suits and women in evening dresses – guarded, no doubt, by men with discreet guns.

‘Told you we should have gone in togs.’ Jim, the group’s only genuine working-class member, said. He’d suggested they hire suits, so as to blend with anyone who might be around in London’s diplomatic district in the middle of the night. The others had laughed at the idea. Now it was beginning to look as if he’d been right. They were going to be very conspicuous in their jeans and shirts, straight from the festival.

‘Perhaps we should have worn kaftans,’ suggested Sam. Pippa giggled. The three men in the group just glanced at each other.

‘OK,’ said Craig. ‘We may have to do a change of plan here. We’ll go down this side.’

Sam had no idea what he was talking about, but before she could ask Craig had walked off along the wrong side of the square, towards the Embassy that was holding the ball. The three other men followed, like soldiers on parade.

Pippa frowned at Sam, who shrugged and set off after them. The paint cans clanked in her rucksack as she turned the corner. She saw Craig kneel and take out his supply of paint, pull off the lids. The two other men did the same.

Sam nudged Pippa. ‘Who are we hitting? These aren’t Americans.’ She could see Asian faces among the dignitaries getting into their cars.

‘Doesn’t matter. The publicity will be good.’

Sam said nothing. She was beginning to wonder about the Total Liberation Brigade. They seemed too amateurish to bring in good publicity for anarchy, or anything else. This random change of target could easily be a hideous mistake. She just hoped that the embassy wasn’t Chinese.

Everyone had their paint out now, except Pippa, who was hopping from foot to foot, her short blonde hair bobbing. ‘What if –’

Too late. Craig was already running forward, shouting at the top of his voice. ‘Free the mind! Free the spirit!’ He hurled a can of paint at the nearest car.
